Royals women’s volleyball opens 2018-19 season with pair of home wins

The 2018-19 PACWEST volleyball season got underway this weekend, and the Royals started things off in style with two big home wins against the College of the Rockies.

The first set on Saturday evening was the closest of the night, with the two teams trading rallies back and forth, but Douglas was able to stay out in front of the Avalanche. Caet McCorkell was on fire early in the first, with a few huge kills and an ace to set up set point for the Royals. The team had no issues closing out the first set 25-21.

In the second set, the Royals pulled away early, doubling up the Avalanche 10-5. A particularly long rally midway through the set featured incredible dig from Jane Kepler flying back over the net, and the resulting Avalanche spike being rejected by Kepler, who did well to get back up and into the play. The Avalanche recovered the block and set up another attack, but Kendra Potskin came up with another massive block to win the point for the Royals, and permanently swing the momentum of the game towards Douglas. The Royals would take the second set 25-15.

The Royals were excellent defensively in this game, getting down for digs and getting up for crucial blocks. But they were excellent on offense as well, with a .397 kill percentage that was almost double that of the Avalanche.

The final set was all royals. They started out with a 6-1 lead and it only got bigger from there, scoring six straight points to end the match as they took the final set 25-12.

The second match was much closer. The teams traded points back and forth, tying at 6-6 and 12-12, before the Avalanche pulled out in front by two points midway through the set. The Avalanche would not relinquish the lead, holding on to take the first set 25-23.

The Royals jumped out to a huge 12-4 lead in the second set, and were up 18-11 before the Avalanche started gaining ground, closing the gap to 4 points before the Royals were able to pull away again, and tied the match with a 25-19 second set win.

Caet McCorkell was subbed into the game with Douglas down 10-6 in the third set, and immediately made an impact with a huge kill. Soon after, she went on a five-point serving run that gave the Royals the lead and forced a timeout in a set they would go on to win 25-18.

The final set of the weekend again started close, with both teams tied at 8 early on, but once again the Royals were able to pull away, establishing a 17-11 lead and forcing another timeout. On match point, Abby Mitro dropped in an ace to give Douglas a perfect start to the 2018-19 women's volleyball season.

The Royals are on the road next weekend, visiting Camosun College for two evening games.
