For the first time since 2008, The Douglas College Men’s basketball team are provincial champions, beating the number one ranked VIU Mariners by 17 points in the final on Saturday night.
The Royals got off on the right foot on Thursday, where they beat Quest University in the quarterfinals by a score of 79-65. Senior Grant Campbell dropped 20 points. The Royals shot an impressive 47 percent from downtown.
That set them up with a match-up in the semi’s with #2 ranked Langara Falcons. The Royals came away with another convincing victory, downing the Falcons by 11 points, 96-85. Douglas had four players in double digit scoring in this game, with both Reese Morris and Noah DeRappard-Yuswack dropping 19, while Ethan McKean had 17 points and Grant Campbell chipped in 15.
Coming into the final, VIU had only lost one game all season. That one loss came at the hands of Douglas, who beat them by 19 points in late January. The Royals got the best of the Mariners once again in the gold medal game, beating them 76-59 and securing their ticket to the Nationals. Grant Campbell finished off his PacWest career in style, leading the high flying Royals in the final with 24 points, five assists, and four steals. Douglas played stellar defense in this game, holding a powerful VIU offense to 32 percent shooting from the field, and just 12 percent from the three-point line. Reese Morris also had a big game for the Royals, adding 17 points and eight rebounds.
Campbell was named the Tournament MVP, dropping 59 points throughout the tournament. Reese Morris and Kameron Johnson were also named Tournament All-stars.
The Royals will represent the PacWest at the CCAA National Championships hosted by Nomades de Montmorency in Quebec from March 13th to 17th.
For seniors Ethan McKean and Grant Campbell, this was an absolute story-book ending to their college basketball careers. McKean came back this season for one reason; to win a Provincial championship. For Grant Campbell, the PacWest All-time leading scorer, all he wanted was to lead this team to Nationals. After five years in a Douglas uniform, they both accomplished their goals. Now the Royals will look to win their first CCAA title since the 07-08’ season.
The Men’s basketball team were also recognized with four players on Conference All-star teams. Grant Campbell was named a 1st team all-star, while both Noah DeRappard-Yuswack and Kameron Johnson were named 2nd team all-stars. Josiah Mastandrea was also named to the All-rookie team.
All in all, it’s been a great season for the Men’s basketball team. They will look to finish off the season with a bang next week in Nationals.
